Casa Bajura, Isabela, Puerto Rico

Building on Puerto Rico’s northern coast means responding to heat, humidity, salinity, hurricanes, flooding, and the realities of an island, where available resources and materials deeply influence architecture. Rather than understanding these conditions as limitations, the project transforms them into the origin of each design decision.

The house is elevated on gabions used as a foundation system, stabilizing the ground, maintaining permeability after flooding, absorbing part of the seismic energy, and reducing its transfer to the structure. The entire construction is based on locally manufactured concrete blocks, optimizing resources, costs, and local labor. Ornamental blocks, inspired by the eroded limestone formations of Isabela, were specifically designed for industrial production. They filter sunlight, promote cross-ventilation, and provide privacy within the sleeping areas. In contrast, the living spaces open completely to the exterior, protected by the house itself, creating a naturally ventilated environment where outdoor living is possible throughout the year, sheltered from sun and rain.

The house does not reproduce the landscape; it teaches us how to perceive it. Architecture reduces the dominance of sight to intensify the experience of light, wind, and sound. Light never enters completely; it is filtered. The landscape changes through sound before it changes visually. Architecture measures time not through clocks, but through light, wind, and sound. The silence of the coquí frogs gives way to the first birdsong, transforming the landscape from something merely observed into something deeply experienced.
